I corinthian 6:1-11

Since we didn't get to meet on Sunday for a discussion of the sermon, I thought it might be good to discuss it here. How were you affected? Did you feel conviction? To download a summary and some questions from the message, click here. I would love to hear your thoughts on justice vs. mercy, and how that plays out when you are the violator or the violated. How far should mercy extend before justice is enforced? Look forward to your thoughts.

  1. I was really struck with the undercurrent of submission to the church in this passage. Submitting to a church is a very tough thing for some of us (definitely for me). It's easier to submit to a government since we really have no choice in that matter. We are governed by the laws of this land so we have always acccepted the courts as having authority, even though the often err. But (probably due to freedom of religion) we are very aware that we must choose to submit to a church body.

  2. I think the submission that we're talking about is more the submission to one another than an authority. When Paul talks about the church, he's not talking about The Church, some kind of staunchly institutionalized corporation. It's more of the context of our home community. Can we submit to one another in a form that will allow us to clear up disputes and conflicts? Can we submit to one another in order to prevent exploitation of each other? Can we call each other out on things - even small things - in a way that builds up the kingdom?
